Just under half of all youth arrested are for charges of theft, simple assault, drug abuse, disorderly conduct or breaking curfew. Most believe that the cause of this is that teens are more inclined to do spontaneous, on a whim, decisions. Since the frontal lobe, containing the decision making process, is the last to develope it makes it much easier for a teen to clear-conceiencely engage in risky behaviors. Crime rates have more than doubled from the 1940's to today. In this essay I'm going to talk about: juvenile crimes in the past, reason they've sprung up, and a few of the crimes juvenilles most commonly commit.
Juvenile Crime in the past was almost nonexhistant. Before the 1960's society looked highly upon morals and citizenship; every little kid wanted to be Superman. When kids were sternly punished, parents were together forever, and society wasn't the scary ficticious monster it is now, crime rates were down.. SURPRISE! As far as my opinion goes, Juvenile crime wouldn't exhist if it wasn't for the moral decline in all of society. In the 1960's is where I see the decline; drug and rebelion became cool and long term goals were overated.
Along with the rise in the popularity of risky behavior the juvenile crime rates raised to over 50% more than previous generations. With the things that children and teens are exposed to in todays society, there's no wonder that percentage is so high. With celebrities changing from talented role models to no talent bad asses of Hollywood, kids have nothing better to look up to. Todays youth isn't raised with the morale that the people who are now adults were raised with. Hell, Martha Stewart has done jail time.
Nowadays, our sweet and innocent youngsters have come a long way from shinanigans to things like: drug abuse, drug dealing, theft, violent assault(among other things). It's much easier for todays youth to get ahold of any drug you can imagine, even just on the campus of a high school. Without the restrictions that parents use to give their children, there's much more leeway for juveniles to engage in drug dealing. Childrens viral intake has alot to do with it as well: the boob tube is now literally that, peer pressure is much harder to deny, and the internet is a the biggest window that they can ever look out of.
Overall, juvenille crime has seriously inclined. Parents have dropped the ball at the wrong time: society is scarier than ever and they aren't protecting what's supposed to be their whole world. Children are in a more adult world much much earlier on. As children develope into adults quicker their world is much more toxic, almost pushing them into risky behaviors. Dumb foundedly, people still pretend to be baffled that youth today is more criminal overall... Do I wonder? Not at all.
